Submissions

Submissions for Website

Box of Bizarro is now accepting submissions for flash fiction stories and poetry to be published on the site. We want weird fiction. We want bizarro. Think William S. Burroughs meets Roald Dahl. Think Dr. Seuss directed by David Lynch. The written works of Salvador Dalí. We are always looking for new styles and voices.

We are also now accepting submissions for images, comic strips, and other art forms. Send us your illustrations, bizarre photos, and strange .gifs. Your songs and short films may also be submitted. Just send the file or a link.

The word count should be no more than 2000 words. Music should be limited to one song per submission. Films should be 30 minutes or less. Multiple submissions and simultaneous submissions are allowed. We don't currently request first time rights. We only request the right to publish your submission one time on our site. Although we don't care about rights issues, other journals may, so be sure to check out other guidelines before submitting. The satisfaction of seeing your words on the screen in front of you will, unfortunately, be your only payment at this time.

Send submissions or any questions to boxofbizarro@gmail.com. Please put "Web Submission" in the subject line. Please include your name, email address, a short bio (optional), and the title.

If we don't get back to you in 3 to 5 weeks, feel free to send a follow-up inquiry.

By submitting your work, you are allowing Box of Bizarro to post your work on our site. If you submit regularly, please check this page for updates as our guidelines are subject to change as we grow.

JuxtaProse (Anthology) Submissions

Submissions are now open for our anthology. The theme of the anthology is time. Time does not have to be the main theme of the story. It must, however, at least be a notable element.  We are looking for bizarro themes and/or subject matter. 2,000 to 5,000 word limit.

JuxtaProse will include a selection of flash fiction, poetry, images, and comic strips. In this instance, flash fiction will be considered as less than 2,000 words. We allow multiple submissions for flash fiction and poetry, as long as total length of all submissions (not including titles) does not exceed 5,000 words. Send your submissions for any forms of bizarre art. As the short story submission guidelines suggest, these pieces should also contain an element of time.

The deadline is October 15th. By submitting, you are allowing Box of Bizarro to publish submitted works in a hardcopy anthology.

Send submissions and questions to boxofbizarro@gmail.com. Please put "Anthology Submission" in the subject line. Please include your name, email address, a short bio, and the title.

Payment of accepted works will be at least one copy of the anthology that your work is printed in. Additional payments will be determined by the results of a crowd-funding venture we are to begin soon.

If you would like to submit, but have an issue with any of these guidelines, feel free to inquire.

Novel and Novella Length Submissions

Submissions are now open for novels/novellas or novel/novella length works (short/flash/poetry anthologies, etc.). We want weird fiction. The same as for the flash fiction submission guidelines above. We want bizarro. Think William S. Burroughs meets Roald Dahl. Think Dr. Seuss directed by David Lynch. The written works of Salvador Dalí. We are always looking for new styles and voices. You have the best chance of being published if you have a fresh, new idea. A perspective we haven't seen. A voice we haven't heard.

Send your submission to boxofbizarro@gmail.com. Please put "Novel/Novella Submission" in the subject line. You may send a pitch or the first few pages of a novel/novella submission. For anthologies, send the title and a story or two. Word count is 9000 - 35000 for a novella and 35001 and beyond for novels.

The entire work must not have been previously published in any way. If submitting an anthology, you are to include no more than two pieces that have been previously published, and you must include on the first page of your submission when, where, and which piece(s) have been previously published. Simultaneous submissions (for now) are allowed until we accept your pitch. If your work is accepted somewhere else, please promptly send us an email so we can remove you from our list. If we accept your pitch, please promptly remove your submission from the other publisher.

We request first time rights and exclusive rights for a minimum of 1 year. Entire length of rights will be determined before the work is published. Payment for the work will be a percentage of sales, agreed upon between the author and Box of Bizarro before publication.

Since this is our first time opening submissions to longer works, I cannot give an exact time period for a response, so be patient. We fully expect to respond to pitches within 60 days. Feel free to follow up if you haven't received a response after that time period.

If you do not have a cover design, let us know. We have in-house artists and can set up an agreement for a non-stock cover design.

If you have any questions feel free to contact us.

Art Submissions

Submissions are now open for art. We are looking for your weird, odd, and bizarre art. We are accepting digital art, photos (must be original and bizarre), paintings, pencil drawings, watercolors, etc. The sky is the limit. If submitting physical art, a photograph of the art may be submitted. Overcast daylight is a great lighting for photographing paintings.

You may also submit artwork, (including sculptures, paintings, etc.) for Box of Bizarro to help you promote.

Please send art submissions to boxofbizarro@gmail.com with "Art Submission" in the subject line. Please specify in the email if your art is only for use on the site, or if you would like promotion help as well.
